Tidow FAQ
Answers before Tidow starts tidying.
Everything important about privacy, rules, Apple Intelligence, cleanup, folder access, the 7-day trial, and the one-time purchase.
What does Tidow actually do?
Tidow watches your Downloads folder, recognizes new files, and applies rules to organize or clean them automatically. It can move files into folders, rename them, delete old clutter, remove duplicates, and keep a clear activity history.
Is Tidow a subscription?
No. Tidow starts with a 7-day free trial. After that, it is a one-time purchase through the Mac App Store. There are no recurring charges.
Do I need to buy before I can try it?
No. You can use Tidow for 7 days first. When the trial ends, Tidow pauses automation and offers the purchase option.
Which macOS version does Tidow require?
Tidow requires macOS 26.0 or later. Apple Intelligence powered features require a compatible Mac with Apple silicon, such as M1 or newer.
Does Tidow send my files to a server?
No. Tidow is designed to work locally on your Mac. Rule matching, file organization, cleanup checks, and Apple Intelligence features run on-device where supported.
Why does Tidow ask for folder access?
macOS requires explicit permission before an app can watch and change files in a folder. Tidow asks for access so it can monitor Downloads, move files, create destination folders, and perform cleanup actions you approve.
Can Tidow organize folders outside Downloads?
Yes. Downloads is the default monitored folder, but rules can move files to custom locations such as iCloud Drive, Dropbox, project folders, external drives, or any folder you grant access to.
Can I review rules before they run?
Yes. Tidow shows organize and cleanup rules clearly in the app. You can edit conditions, actions, destinations, priority order, and whether a rule is active.
How does the magic rule generator work?
You describe what should happen in plain language, and Tidow turns that into a rule draft. The best prompts mention what to detect, what action to take, and optionally a destination, age, size, source, or filename pattern.
What is Apple Intelligence used for?
Apple Intelligence can help Tidow understand document content, such as invoices, contracts, receipts, or company names inside a file. If Apple Intelligence is unavailable, regular file type, extension, source, age, size, and filename rules still work.
Can Tidow read scanned PDFs or images?
Tidow can use on-device text recognition for supported documents and images, including PDFs without a clean text layer. Recognition quality depends on image sharpness, contrast, rotation, and the source file.
Will Tidow delete files permanently?
Cleanup rules are designed to be reviewable and predictable. Delete actions move matching files to the Trash, so you can recover them from macOS Trash before emptying it.
How are duplicate files detected?
Tidow compares files using reliable local signals such as file fingerprints and metadata instead of just guessing from filenames. This helps avoid removing files that merely look similar.
Does Tidow run all the time?
Tidow can run quietly from the menu bar and watch Downloads in the background. You can also trigger scans manually or adjust automatic scan frequency in Settings.
What happens if a file is still downloading?
Tidow waits until a file is stable before processing it. That helps avoid moving partial downloads or files that another app is still writing.
Can I pause Tidow?
Yes. You can disable individual rules, stop automation, or quit Tidow from the menu bar whenever you want.
Can I undo an action?
Tidow keeps an activity history so you can see what happened. Move and rename actions are designed to be transparent, and cleanup files remain recoverable from Trash until you empty it.
What happens if a rule overlaps with another rule?
Rule order defines priority. More specific rules can be placed above broader ones, so a rule for invoices can run before a general PDF rule.
What languages does Tidow support?
Tidow currently supports English and German, including the app interface and natural-language rule prompts.
Can I reset Tidow and start over?
Yes. Settings include a reset option that stops scans, removes rules and history, clears access permissions, and starts Tidow like a fresh installation.
Can I restore my purchase?
Yes. Purchases are handled by the Mac App Store, and Tidow includes a restore option for Macs using the same Apple ID.
